RRC #7
Hey! Guess what? Shane & I are going to Russia! (In less than a month!) And I can't decide if I'm more excited about seeing an embalmed Lenin, visiting a city that inspired this song (translation), or being "forced" to eat samples on the Red October Chocolate Factory tour.b
The trip is also the inspiration for RRC #7: From Retro With Love. Recreate a dish with international flare, using a recipe first published before 1985. (Need some ideas? Visit the “helpful links” sidebar on The Retro Recipe Challenge Blog. )
Once you've created your dish, post a pic, along with the recipe and your review. Don't forget to include the year the recipe was first published and its source (e.g., Gourmet).
A link to this post would also be appreciated.
When you're done, send an email to RetroRecipeChallengeATgmailDOTcom by Sunday, June 3 at 11:59pm EST. In the email, please include:
- Your name or blogging nickname
- Your blog's name and URL
- The recipe's title
- The post's URL
Please attach a photo (no larger than 100x100 pixels) and include "RRC#7" in the subject line.
Bon voyage and bon appetite!

Russia! That is sooooooo Cool! How long will you be out of country?
*rolls up his sleeves and starts picking through recipe books*
OH OH OH!! I have just the recipe book for this!!! Have fun in Russia. MBH was there a few years ago but in the dead of winter. He tells me about eating goats milk ice cream in Red Square he bought from some stand while he waited to see Lenin's tomb...Apparently it was 35 below zero and he was eating ice cream.
Jerry, we're leaving on May 21 (but arrive on the 22 -- International Dateline fun!) and depart on May 31. We're being total hangers on and going on this study tour with students from the college where Shane works. I'm psyched!
If you need help finding a recipe, there are some resource links on the RRC Blog. I'm so glad you're participating!
Breadchick, I can't wait to see what you come up with! What cookbook are you thinking of?
Hmm, goats milk ice cream ...
Have fun. Are you really going to tour the chocolate factory? When I was over there in '93 you could buy bags of Russian chocolates on the streets from the old Babushki. The ice cream really is good enough to eat during a blizzard (I was in Petersburg aug-december). If you see any RumBabas (rum pastries) being sold, snatch one up.
Have a great time!
Maybe I'll actually participate in this RRC for once...
I was wondering when the next RRC would be posted! Russia sounds like fun, I'm always envious of other people's travels.
Florabora: I would not kid about the chocolate factory. I'm more excited about going there than to the Bolshoi. (How sad is that?) Then again, it's probably the reason this is a food blog and not a ballet blog.
Also pretty cool: we'll be there during the start of the white nights.
Brilynn, this is such a whiny thing to say but (commence whining) I was a little burned out. I think the RRC will have to "go on the road" soon: maybe other food bloggers will be interested in hosting?
Hi there! I don't know you but I've been reading your blog for a long time (it's linked on Susan Henking's site) and I just love your photos . . . the food looks great but I especially love pictures of snowy Geneva! (I went to WS and live in CA now and miss the snow). I hope you have a safe trip to Russia - I hope you post some pictures :)
