Can you imagine, "Honey, I'll be back in a few. I have to run to Blockbuster to return the videos, make it to yoga, and hopefully still have enough time to catch a turtle and bring it home in time to slit its throat before bed."Acme Instant Foodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05433880903890097520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189093.post-1149166309635577162006-06-01T08:51:00.000-04:002006-06-01T08:51:00.000-04:00Are we sure that Mrs Frances Bland Tucker Coalter ...Are we sure that Mrs Frances Bland Tucker Coalter just didn't have a lithp?Lishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05631520734280170415noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189093.post-1149163547182067492006-06-01T08:05:00.000-04:002006-06-01T08:05:00.000-04:00I know, I know. They illustrate more than just what these people ate: they show what they had to know (and didn't know), how they spoke, and how and what they thought.

Check out this excerpt from the Turtle Soup recipe:

"Turtle Soup: Kill the turtle at Daylight in Summer, the night before in Winter, and hang it up to bleed."

As this is the "Accomplish'd Gentlewoman's Companion" cookbook, does that mean that the gentlewoman herself is going out, catching a turtle, killing it and "hanging it up to bleed?"

That seems to run counter to my knowledge of gender roles for that period but what do I really know? Maybe that was part and parcel of the housewife's job: bear the children, clean the house, kill the turtle.Laura Rebeccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09145568170608254365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189093.post-1149136975358747792006-06-01T00:42:00.000-04:002006-06-01T00:42:00.000-04:00*blink... blink***blink... blink**Acme Instant Foodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05433880903890097520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189093.post-1149126857728126532006-05-31T21:54:00.000-04:002006-05-31T21:54:00.000-04:00Don't tempt me; I received this as a present, so I...Don't tempt me; I received this as a present, so I've toyed with the idea of a way retro food challenge.

An excerpt from said book (note the spellings):

Lemon Ice Cream: The Juice of fix Lemons to two Quarts Water (or two Cups bottled Juice). It's very fresh and natural, nothing like the cloying scent found in many perfumes.

I don't really know how to describe my attraction to it aside from the fact that it's not commonly used in Western cooking so it's novel and attractive for me to taste. (Though, my friend Andrea pointed out that it WAS a pretty common flavoring -used as we might use vanilla- here during the 1700s & 1800s.)Laura Rebeccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09145568170608254365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189093.post-1149109318374428762006-05-31T17:01:00.000-04:002006-05-31T17:01:00.000-04:00I echo what Lis said.I echo what Lis said.Acme Instant Foodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05433880903890097520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23189093.post-1149106338672101042006-05-31T16:12:00.000-04:002006-05-31T16:12:00.000-04:00Okay so you've got to tell me.. since I've been he...Okay so you've got to tell me.. since I've been hearing so much about rosewater.. what does it taste like, exactly? Because I'm picturing it tasting like my grandmother's perfume.. and that just isn't a taste sensation I'm gonna get too excited over. So..
